Sri Lanka

Confirmed Death Toll

• January 6: More than 46,000 , with more than 14,000 missing.

Sri Lankan officials say 27,527 are dead and 3,858 missing in non-rebel-held areas of the island nation. Tamil Tiger rebels in conjunction with the U.N. Development Program say nearly 19,000 are dead and 10,000 missing in rebel-held territory.

"As many as 500 Myanmar labourers in Thailand, many of them unregistered fishermen, are feared dead after killer tsunamis slammed into the kingdom, a rights official said Thursday. Surapong Kongchanthuek, of Thailand's committee on human rights for stateless or displaced people, said that given the high number of migrant workers along Thailand's coast it was probable that hundreds of them were among the thousands of casualties."
